What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Learn how to spot the warning signs and symptoms of IBS.

While all of us, at some point or another, will deal with stomach pains, if cramping and bowel changes keep happening to you then you may be wondering what’s going on. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects anywhere from 25 to 45 million people in the US. Could you be one of them? Discover the symptoms of IBS and when you should see our Encino, CA, gastroenterologists Dr. Mordo Suchov and Dr. Alan Naim for further evaluation.

What is IBS?

IBS is a condition that results from a highly sensitive intestinal tract. IBS isn’t a disease but rather a disorder that consists of a variety of intestinal issues that do not have a known cause. IBS is not the same as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, someone can develop both of these conditions. While a nuisance, IBS is not considered serious and will not lead to more severe health complications.

What are the symptoms?

The classic symptoms associated with IBS include,

  • Stomach cramping
  • Diarrhea or constipation (sometimes these symptoms may alternate)
  • Bloating
  • Mucus in the stool
  • Pain or nausea after eating (feeling uncomfortably full despite eating a normal portion)

Who develops IBS?

Anyone can develop this condition; however, it is more common in women than men, and in those between the ages of 18 and 35.

Are there certain factors that can trigger a flare-up?

There are certain foods and drinks that can exacerbate IBS symptoms. Foods and drinks to avoid include,

  • Spicy, fried or fatty goods
  • Dairy
  • Breads and other grains
  • Coffee, alcohol and sodas
  • Processed/junk foods (e.g. cookies)

Stress, your menstrual cycle and certain medications (e.g. antibiotics) can also trigger IBS symptoms.

How is IBS treated?

Most patients will experience relief through lifestyle and dietary changes; however, your doctor may also prescribe medication based on the symptoms you are experiencing. Your gastroenterologist can work with you to create a diet plan to prevent flare-ups.
